Marianne Chatterton's melodic folk glows warmly with insight, reflective honesty, and compassion. Chatterton sings about life's shadows and light - of leaving the
clouds in the rearview mirror and moving toward the promise of a fuller life, as she does in the first-person reflections of "Away From the West", "Gypsy Fool", and
"Shadows". In other vignettes, her characters are either tethered to their ghosts and demons or disconnected from their dreams. In "Asleep All Day", Annie is a
nocturnal streetwalker with a heavy heart; an elderly woman daydreams in "Distant Drum" about the parents she never knew; "Desperate Recollection" finds its subject
struggling with life goals that grow more elusive with each passing day. Chatterton's lighter side comes through with the bluesy groove of "Keep it Fresh," a humorous
plea to keep a maturing relationship from slipping into a flat routine.
Chatterton's engaging style is the fruit of 20 years of songwriting that began in upstate New York and now emanates from Massachusetts. She produced and recorded
Distant Drum herself, accenting her fine acoustic rhythm playing with fine lead work from Kenny Girard, and the fluid grace of fretless bass (Kent Allyn) and violin
(Davis Eure).
"My [Taylor] 712 is perfect for my songs," she says. "The rosewood warmth, its responsiveness, lightness, punch and well-balanced tone."
"I enjoyed hearing Marianne's music…Great voice!"
Patty Larkin
"An album I play with pleasure…fresh, warm, accessible music…"
