Casting Shadows is a starkly beautiful contemporary folk album that invites the listener with its warm, rustic glow. Western North Carolina singer-songwriter Leigh Hilger's willowy vibrato and her cedar-topped 714 make faithful companions in her poetic reflections on vulnerability, hope, fear, loss, change, and uncertainty. Hilger conveys in her voice an honesty, an empathy, a gentle poise as she searches for meaning in past relationships and in the difficult realities the subjects of her songs must confront.
Hilger grew up on a small family farm, and that same quiet spaciousness of rural life still permeates her music. Such talents as Chris and Lynn Rosser, Jimmy Landry, Don Porterfield, and the Freighthoppers' Frank Lee help fill out Hilger's melodies, and tasteful embellishments from Andy Kluge (guitar) and David Johnson (mandolin, dobro, fiddle) add light blues and country tinges, lifting the songs to even greater heights.
"Hot young singer-songwriter with an amazing voice and strong guitar skills…a premier new acoustic performer."
Asheville Citizen Times
