Nevada-based quartet Junior Hot Cell has dubbed its exotic sound "Acoustic World Fusion" or "Acoustic Afro-Celtic". An exquisite melding of acoustic folk and world beat
genres, the twelve instrumental tracks on The Unfenced Land span a global palette of soundscapes in pursuit of the band's musical vision: "to blend the organic richness
and warmth of acoustic guitar-driven contemporary folk-rock with the beautiful, memorable melodies of Scots/Irish fiddle music and the infectious, hypnotic grooves of
flamenco, reggae, and African music."
In the process, Junior Hot Cell proves itself to be a truly unfenced band. Superb musicianship and a flair for capturing the distinctive nuances of so many different
world styles help transport the band into authentic yet fresh new terrain with each tune. Cello, fiddle, bouzouki, and cittern add acoustic string flavoring, while the
bodhran, ashiko, talking drum, bongos, and congas yield earthy rhythmic textures that both soothe and heighten the urge to dance. It seems appropriate that the band's
lead guitarist, George Rhee, is an astronomy professor; and that Keith Roberson, JHC's rhythmic force, is a geologist: their alchemy seems to draw energy from their
connection to nature and blend the music of the spheres with a tribal undercurrent. Says Roberson of the 710 used in the studio: "We used some great guitars on this
recording, but everyone agreed my Taylor stood out. It records beautifully."
The Unfenced Land earned Junior Hot Cell the 1999 Popular Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
"Audio exotica from nature's bounty - lush, rhythmic, and as warm as an uncloudy day, The Unfenced Land just feels good to listen to. Junior Hot Cell has succeeded
in creating a stunning understatement of smooth passion…"
Lee Abraham,
Las Vegas City Life
"Junior Hot Cell is indeed hot. The Unfenced Land fulfills the promise shown in their earlier work, and moves them to a place reserved for only the finest talents
in both acoustic and world music…it's great music that transcends categories…"
Roberta Schwartz,
Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange
