Guitarist and self-described "sonic alchemyst" Scott Huckabay imbues his music with a shamanistic fervor, drawing from a vast palette of tones, techniques, and tunings to
create rich, otherworldly, acoustic-trance soundscapes. His compositions embrace the healing, transformative power of music that he discovered during his chronic bouts
with illness as a child: withdrawn from other kids, he taught himself to play guitar and quickly discovered a passion for expressing himself. Then, more than decade
ago, Huckabay suffered a near-fatal motorcycle accident, which doctors believed would keep him from using his left leg or right hand. He chose to discard the prognosis,
began to recover, and again picked up the guitar, sparking a remarkable healing process and period of creativity that was further inspired by a year spent swimming
with wild dolphins and whales. Music as a journey of renewal and strength shaped Huckabay's personal mission as a musician: to share his music to help others "find
healing, joy, and inner peace."
Alchemy is the follow-up to Huckabay's debut, Peace Dance. His melodic fret dancing is festooned with rhythmic interplay and dramatic texture, threading together
an exotic weave of harmonics, dynamics, hammer-ons, note-bending, a Michael Hedges-like percussive attack, and effects pedals that allow him to delay and syncopate
with his rhythms. Huckabay's distinctive fusion of rock, folk, world-beat, and blues also incorporates a violin bow, E-Bow and other string sliding to mimic the
sounds of his beloved dolphins and whales, along with a jungle's worth of other feral sounds. His bare feet pound rhythms into the stage - one ankle wrapped in bells -
underscoring the deep, tribal ethos of his music. In Huckabay's hands, the guitar is a sacred instrument that yields a sonic panorama and celebrates the ultimate
possibilities of life. From the gentle serenity of nature to the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, Huckabay's playing stamps a unique signature on the face of contemporary
instrumental music.
