Jonathan Kingham's songwriting has garnered several critical nods since the release of his self-titled, self-produced CD in 1997. Performing Songwriter magazine dubbed it
one of the best "Do It Yourself" albums of 1997-98. Kingham took first place at the '97 Telluride [Colorado] Troubadour Songwriting Contest and earned himself an opening
spot for Shawn Colvin in front of 10,000 at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. He also won the '98 Unisong Song Contest and reached the finals of the '98 John Lennon
Songwriting Contest.
On Kingham's second CD, Hardwood Floors, his husky-velvet voice glows with a soothing warmth, lending a mellow, melodic texture to his tunes. Kingham is equally adept
at rendering a subdued ballad or weaving his vocals nimbly through a percussive acoustic groove, like he does in "Rain", a lament (albeit an upbeat one) about too much
precipitation (he grew up in Central California but now lives in Seattle). In the title track, Kingham waxes wistfully about young, uncomplicated love,
finding a groove in the wake of a sweet organ shimmy. The album's recording roster features guitarist Duke Levine (Mary Chapin Carpenter), bassist Jim Lamond
(Susan Tedeschi), and New York-based keyboard session ace Joe Barbato.
Kingham has shared the stage with David Wilcox, Michael McDonald, and Jonatha Brooke.
