Donna Mogavero
Donna Mogavero's sure-footed songcraft is the mark of a seasoned pro who knows how to cook up a song that satisfies like a good meal. The Columbus, Ohio-based artist has been penning and performing for 20 years, in fact, treating listeners to her emotive vocals and sensitive insights. Her music is both refined and natural, fueled by a rootsy mix of rock, folk, country and blues. A skilled blender of genres, Mogavero uses emotional context to shape each song's style and mood; she knows how to mingle rock 'n' roll verve with a rhythmic lilt, giving her songs a lasting depth and emotional complexity that mirror life.

Ohio has been Mogavero's home base for most of her career. She briefly flew the coop for Nashville, where she met and collaborated with bass player Dave Pomeroy (Trisha Yearwood). She then took her musical vision to Los Angeles, but realized that while mainstream success was attainable, it was more important to stay connected with her daughter. So she returned to Columbus, which, although lacking the robust music community of Nashville, has rewarded her with critical recognition.

In the 1994 Columbus Music Awards, Mogavero was voted Outstanding Acoustic Solo Performance, Outstanding Folk Singer Vocalist, Outstanding Rock Singer Vocalist, and Talent Deserving Wider Recognition. The same year she was also honored as Best Female Vocalist in the Columbia Guardian Readers Poll. In 1996, Mogavero was also chosen to appear on a Santa Monica, California compilation disc released nationally on Sapphire Records. Her accolades prompted the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science Foundation to select her, along with six other music professionals, for an Ohio State University Conference called Grammy Backstage.

Out of the Nest, the follow-up to Mogavero's 1995 debut, Acoustic, is a compelling journey to reclaim her spiritual center in the roiled wake of divorce and the dismantled "nest" of a secure home life. Her voice fits into each song like a favorite pair of jeans, and confidently imbues her sturdy song designs with equal parts strength and vulnerability. Her acoustic guitar work is adorned by a superb ensemble of Nashville players, led by guitarist/producer Rob McNelly, and including drummer Steve Ebe and bassist Jay Weaver (both perform with Tanya Tucker and Trisha Yearwood) and keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden (the Mavericks, Sixpence None the Richer). Mogavero sounds like she's on the verge of swooning in "Flat on the Ground" as her vocals float through McNelly's reverb-soaked guitar atmosphere, testifying to love's mesmerizing spell. Mandolin and accordion beautifully underscore Mogavero's voice with plaintive country elegance in "Vines", as she suggests a return to a familiar place without returning to the past. "Long Enough to Fall" is love's exhilarating joy ride, pealing out after a period of heart-mending, fueled by McNelly's piston-popping electric lead.

Mogavero says she wrote these songs as her experiences were unfolding, and the result is a visceral, intimate, and authentic account of tumult as deep-rooted feelings are uprooted. Classified under the broad umbrella of AAA (Adult Acoustic Alternative), Out of the Nest has received exposure on the nationally syndicated World Café radio program. Mogavero also rides the airwaves in Columbus as the host of the Sunday morning radio program, Acoustic Coffeehouse on WWCD 101, enabling her to play local artists and other gifted singer-songwriters who don't cleanly fit today's "narrowcast" formats.

Of her Taylor 812, Mogavero says: "This guitar has truly helped define my sound. I perform 2-4 gigs a week, and I always hear how great my guitar sounds - I let others play it so I can hear it as well. This is the best-sounding and playing acoustic guitar I've heard - I just love my Taylor."

"Your music is wonderful. Keep singing, playing and growing."

— Livingston Taylor

"Just one listen to Out of the Nest will have you wonderin', 'Why the hell didn't I know about Mogavero sooner?'"

— John Schoenberger, Totally Adult

"Donna Mogavero is unquestionably the strongest unsigned talent in our market. She is a seasoned performer, professional, and deserves the big break."

— Scott Stienecker, PromoWest
