Travis Steele Nevels has taken the road less traveled in developing a percussive playing style he calls "American acoustic freestyle fingerstyle".
Never interested in learning "other people's songs" as a kid, he found the attempt to replicate Berry, Clapton, and Hendrix licks frustrating and
constricting. "All I wanted to do was bang out chords," he says in his CD liner notes, "any old way I felt like it." And bang away he does, not to
mention tap, slap, and scratch (throw in some banjo rolls and power chords, too). In fact, Nevels outfitted his 710-CE with a protective (second)
pickguard along the upper waist of his soundboard. He also relies on a Fishman blender pickup system to make his percussive licks more audible.
Nevels' self-titled CD melds the caffeinated percussiveness of Michael Hedges, Preston Reed, and Richard Leo Johnson with the fingersprint pace of
Doyle Dykes and the neo-traditional American voicings that Pat Kirtley articulates so well. His discursive style-stitching has drawn fans from
everywhere redneck bars, coffeehouses, alt-rock clubs. Such enthusiastic receptions, he says, have further inspired his writing and playing.
Nevels was the 1998 North/South Carolina Fingerpicking Guitar Champion.
