If his compositions stand as a barometer, guitarist/songwriter Shawn Persinger is his
own man. Persinger makes another compelling case for the rich, dimensional possibilities
of the acoustic guitar as a solo instrument on his first solo release, Reasonable Horse.
From angular lead lines into avant-garde terrain to fluid, melodic runs accented with
harmonics, Persinger mingles traditional sounding fingerstyle arrangements with contemporary
percussive textures, dissonant tension, and complex, progressive, boundary-effacing
techniques, dubbing his style "Modern/Primitive Guitar". Persinger has further honed/informed
his distinctive voice via world travels, busking throughout Europe and Morocco in 1999.
More recently, he traveled to Asia, spending time in Thailand and India, exposing himself
to each culture's uniquely expressive indigenous music.
Some eastern seaboard fans may know of Persinger's work with his previous band, the
instrumental Boud Deun. The northern Virginia group cited King Crimson, the Mahavishnu
Orchestra, Leo Kottke, and the Washington D.C. hardcore punk outfit, Minor Threat, as
influences. Persinger may be more acoustic these days, but no less adventurous.
Reasonable Horse's densely-knit tunes undulate with emotion, swirling in a sonic
kaleidoscope of moods, textures, and voices. A foreboding string-tapping phrase emits
an opening caveat in "Hideous Kinky", then yields to a shapely, insistent fingerstyle
melody. "Living in Never" glows with a deceptively languid tone that belies its subtle
complexities. Persinger never coasts: his protean arrangements ebb and flow, flavored
by an array of alternate tunings and rhythmic subcurrents.
Persinger used his 410 extensively on the recording.
"From standard tuning to drop B it always sounds and plays great. And live, the
electronics are wonderful. Its versatility is astounding. From vocal tunes and
traditional fingerstyle to the avant-garde, my Taylor is always a pleasure."
"...complex arrangements with a snarling intensity."
Jim Derogatis, Guitar World
"...will have your fingers wondering if they can do that."
Tom Mulhern, Guitar Shop
"Languid patterns and helixing lines that explode."
Richard Gehr, The Village Voice
"Highly recommended to the adventurous."
Michael Bell, Unbroken Chain (Austin, TX)
