Since 1994, Ben Murray and Siobhán Quinn have been forging a unique blend of contemporary and traditional folk and acoustic
rhythm-and-blues. Together, the two are flamboyant, funny, serious, rock-steady musicians. On their inaugural recording,
Two Rivers, Quinn's spirited vocals and Murray's expressive guitar work (and voice) infuse their songs with a soulful
energy that is highly contagious.
"[On] Two Rivers, the duo's arrangements impart a feeling of musical feng shui; the voices and instrumentation are precisely placed for maximum effect in spare, frequently ethereal settings that nevertheless derive momentum from an overriding sense of spontaneity. Scott Petito's tasteful production values betray an attention to detail that makes each track a mini-project. Murray and his 812-C certainly came to play; his articulate fingerpicking, febrile slide work, and supple chording remain sensitive to their surroundings, supplying the proper assertiveness while avoiding overstatement. And the boy ain't a bad singer; you'd be hard-pressed to find a fresher, more moving read of Gordon Lightfoot's lovely 'Early Morning Rain'.
The versatile Quinn, meanwhile, adapts her sonorous voice to the demands of a dauntingly eclectic collection of tunes, from the flaxen folk of 'Act of Nature' to the plaintive blues of 'The Richest One,' from a haunting a cappella rendering of the Irish lament, 'Oh My Donald', to the sultry sass of 'It's Raining.' [Quinn's] playful, growling joust with Murray's ornery baritone on 'Samson and Delilah' yanks hoots of appreciation from a live coffeehouse audience (although she cites Etta James and Koko Taylor as influences, Quinn earned her stage stripes at age 19 when the late Stevie Ray Vaughan pulled her onstage to dance with him on 'Look at Little Sister').
Wood&Steel
"An eclectic folk fusion... [their] musical chemistry clicks... soulful, sweet-sounding folk music."
Stacey Morris, The Post Star
". . .worthy of note was [Roger McGuinn's] opening act, Siobhán Quinn and Ben Murray. This acoustic R&B duo from Troy made a sizzling first impression . . . This energetic couple has the potential to turn the local folk scene on its ear."
