Greg Ryan
Vermont singer-songwriter Greg Ryan was barely taller than his dad's guitar when he started playing at age 6. Growing up in a musical family, he absorbed an eclectic array of music, from classical to Andean folk, sifting through jazz, funk, bluegrass and world music idioms along the way. More than 20 years later, Ryan has developed into a complete musician: a soulful singer, brilliant multi-instrumentalist, engaging performer, and experienced engineer/producer with tasteful sensibilities. He has won numerous music competitions, including the 1998 New Hampshire Acoustic Guitar Competition, and is known for his fearless improvisation during live performances.

On Hope To Find, Ryan's vocals lead the way. He unfurls his lyrics in a pliable baritone that brims with sweet longing, while his brilliantly understated guitar work accents his melodies. These songs aren't in any particular hurry either, which adds a spacious, spare allure the sound. In addition to guitar, Ryan plays fretted and fretless electric bass, banjo, and cello, enlisting some sterling local talent in Bruce Catlin (mandolin), and his wife Anne, (piano, backing vocals). Ryan says he not only used his 810 throughout Hope To Find, but on numerous other projects he's produced over the years. He mentions in his liner notes that it's known around the studio as "The Holy Grail."

"A wonderful guitarist, songwriter and live performer. Greg's songs are spirited and insightful. See him live as soon as you can."

— Willy Porter

"An impressive debut - showcases his obvious and mature talents; rich deep voice, skilled and mellifluous picking on acoustic guitar, and the studio smarts to produce a spare, haunting sound appropriate to his achingly lovely compositions."

— Seven Days Magazine

"One of the best CDs of '99 - including releases on the major labels. What a great disk!"

— L. Larcheveque (WUMA)
