Trying to resist the ethereal allure of Sara Wheeler's luminous pop-rock would be like the oceans trying to escape their lunar pull. Wheeler's
exotic vocal lilt has a unique, entrancing sound (at times with an inflection suggestive of the British Isles), and transforms her latest CD,
Moonlight Dancers, into a collection of Siren's songs that resonate with irresistible melodies, gracefully shifting moods, and lyrics rich with
poetic narrative and penetrating lyrical insight about embracing the mysteries of life.
Wheeler's musical life began in Michigan at age ten with the trumpet, before segueing to piano and guitar. She studied at Boston's Berklee
College of Music, honed her acoustic pop sound on the New England coffeehouse circuit, and earned a nomination as 1999's College Coffeehouse Performer of the Year. Wheeler has also toured internationally, playing to receptive crowds throughout Europe and Japan. Moonlight Dancers, Wheeler's fourth release, finds her blending her talents as an accomplished writer, singer, pianist and guitarist
into a band setting with electric guitarist Chris Drew, drummer/percussionist Toby May, and bassist Ivan Sokoloff.
Wheeler's wanderlust has led her through India, Nepal, Hong Kong, and other exotic settings, coloring her life palette with a
wealth of experiences and insights that have inspired her song's themes and given them an enlightened voice. She embraces her lyrics like a lover,
and navigates each song's emotional terrain with an open intimacy that links the personal with the universal, in a mature style that steers clear of
self-absorption or weighty sentiment. Wheeler's lyrics reveal people who are searching - for love, self-awareness, truth, peace. "There are so many
doors in a lifetime," Wheeler sings in the title track over a loping acoustic groove; and that theme takes further form as Wheeler's songs follow their
subjects through the various doors they choose. With her supple voice, emotive piano underpinnings, sensitive dynamics, and rhythmic guitar textures,
Wheeler and her band create an exquisite pop atmosphere that can move from haunting to buoyant.
"Wheeler, with her first British live show, proved why she is one of the most exciting, riveting and original singer-songwriters of recent years. She has great stage charisma, coming off as a person as much as a singer."
Adrian Cooke, Country Music International
"The graceful high-flying theme of "Moonlight Dancers", the dark, moody passages of "For the First Time", and the obscure, intriguing melody of "India" are exquisitely produced, brilliantly written and brilliantly sung."
Allan Cackett, What's On (UK)
"Wheeler is a caringly sensitive singer/guitarist who recalls the more mesmerizing side of John Martyn."
Steve Morse, The Boston Globe
"Wheeler has also toured constantly, hitting clubs and colleges and taking her show oversees to Japan. All this is enhanced by the fact that Wheeler is such a remarkable talent. She has a lovely, lilting voice; she writes complex, textured songs; and she is an accomplished guitarist and pianist."
