“Joel Rafael, his family and friends are excellent examples of musical traditions that have helped make this nation great,” writes Dr. Guy Logsdon in the liner notes to Woodyboye: Songs of Woody Guthrie (And Tales Worth Telling) Volume II, the followup to 2003’s Woodeye [On Review, Winter 2003]. Logsdon refers to a list of traditions fostered by Guthrie, easily the most influential folksinger of all time, including family music, music of faith and belief in this country, and music confronting social concerns and issues.
Guthrie fans no doubt agree with Logsdon’s assessment; newcomers to the man’s music could use this second volume of his songs, as interpreted by the Joel Rafael Band, as a crash course in Guthriana. The CD contains four “new” Woody Guthrie songs, thanks to Guthrie’s daughter, Nora, who supplied Rafael with four sets of Woody’s lyrics that had never been set to music; Rafael composed music for them.
Guest appearances on Woodyboye include Jackson Browne, Arlo Guthrie, Van Dyke Parks, Jennifer Warnes, the Burns Sisters, and Jimmy LaFave.
