For over 35 years ‘Muziekhuis Souman’ has been a well-known name in the music world. At a young age founder Guert Souman opened his own shop in 1977 on the Clematisstraat in Wezep. On a surface of 250 m2 (2690.98 square feet) the first piano’s and organs were presented and sold. With his experience in the maintenance and tuning of the instruments, the company quickly became a household name in the industry. Geurt was/is also a conductor for several choirs and so he came into contact with many recognized and well-known pianists and organists.

So their little world grew bigger…

Business in the ’80 was a little tougher when it came to the renting and selling of instruments. To pay the bills, Geurt played the piano at some weddings and other special events. After a period of crisis the company was reborn and moved on to a bright future, full speed ahead.

New music store Stationsweg Wezep

There was an expansion of the company and not much later the building was sold and the company moved to the Stationsweg in Wezep. What used to be a furniture store (Spakman Meubelen), was now taken over by Geurt and his music instruments. The surface was now more than doubled and 700 m2 (7534.98 square feet) was made available for Yamaha piano’s and organs that, because of self-import, turned out to be a huge success. As one of but few piano businesses they were taking some big risks, but as entrepreneurs they were willing to give it a try.

Service and quality, craft and maintenance, just getting a ‘cup of coffee’, it all became normal at Muziekhuis Souman. It became known by musicians and consumers, another step forward in the music world! Another expansion followed, this time in the shape of the product range.

Expansion with our own guitar department

An amazing guitar department was opened on the second floor and there too the service and quality, or in other words, passion was not hard to find. Michael (guitar specialist) was hired as piano tuner, but always had a preference for guitar and he ran the guitar department for a few years. You can buy both an acoustic as well as an electric guitar from us.

And then came another expansion; Hardenberg! A music store was rented and run by eldest son Jan Willem. With the necessary sales in keys and guitars, both of which he can play, Jan Willem after several years chose for a different branch and became very successful in it. The entrepreneurs blood seems to run in the family.

So people set their eyes back on the business premises in Wezep and looked to the third son, Ard. Just like his older brother, he followed the Piano Vakschool and was quickly enrolled in the business. After having tuned and played many piano’s, Ard’s love for guitar also grew, so he took on the responsibility of running the guitar department. There they had already made quite the name for themselves and had had a handful of celebrities set foot set foot on their floors. More demonstrations were given, by for example Doyle Dykes (former endorser Taylor Guitars), and many other high-end guitar brands participated.

Expansion with online music store

With the arrival of the internet, success grew for Muziekhuis Souman. A new web shop, a wider audience was reached and from everywhere in the country the showroom and online showroom were visited for the best instruments. Michael, who is still active, received a bigger costumer registry in guitar maintenance and fine tuning. Ard became co-owner of the company with Geurt and so a unique combination was created. Passion, craft and the perspective of another expansion were combined…

New music store from business park H2O in Wezep/Hattemerbroek

New construction? That’s negotiable… And that negotiating quickly translated into years of rope pulling with various other parties. A long and tiring journey that resulted in some sleepless nights, but the strong willed persevere, and with such a family of entrepreneurs this show is on the road. Deals and sketches of the new business premises were made by a costumer, or better yet, a friend of the company. Muziekhuis Souman was supported during the whole process by a very good acquaintance and friend, Reinier, who sacrificed a lot of his free time to help.

After several years it’s finally time; Business park H2O on Rijksweg A28 in Wezep/Hattemerbroek (region Zwolle) is joined by a new business. Music store Muziekhuis Souman is expanding to a surface of 2000 m2 (21528.53 square feet) and sees many more opportunities to grow. What first began with a love for the trade, will continue to be executed with passion for the years to come. Geurt and Ard Souman wish you a warm welcome to Muziekhuis Souman and want to share with you her advices, specialties and experiences.

A musical greeting from the whole Muziekhuis Souman team!
