Emily King

Emily King was born in 1985 in New York City, the younger of two children whose parents regularly toured the country as professional singers. That early immersion in the world of music inspired her to pursue the craft professionally beginning at age 16. Soon, King appeared at popular venues in the city, including The Bitter End and CBGB. A few short years later, she signed a record deal with J Records and debuted her first album, East Side Story, which peaked at #60 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

A true grassroots success story, King gathered a following the old fashioned way: lots of shows at lots of venues, handing out CD samplers and playing for as many people as possible. When the album was finally released, it received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. The album’s success led her to performances and collaborations with high-profile artists like John Legend, Alicia Keys, and Erykah Badu.

In 2015, King released her sophomore album, The Switch, on her self-created record label, Making Music Records.

King had a busy 2016, performing on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Conan, also opening for Alabama Shakes around the release of her critically acclaimed album The Switch: Deluxe Edition. Now moving into 2017, King is becoming label mates with Brittany Howard and co., Benjamin Booker, Brandi Carlile, and many other greats, as she has inked a deal with ATO Records. King celebrates her roots, pop, soul, and indie influences by carefully crafting compositions that serve as the perfect vehicle for her polished, lush vocals.
