Overview
By far the most common wood used for acoustic guitar tops, spruce’s ideal combination of stiffness, light weight, flexibility and strength translates into a rich, broadly appealing voice. Luthiers and musicians alike love spruce for its blend of articulation and power, producing well-defined notes across the frequency spectrum backed by a responsive dynamic range that remains balanced at high volumes and clear with a gentle touch.
Origin
Luthiers have made use of several spruce varieties, with Sitka — originating mostly in Canada — currently the most common. Other varieties include Engelmann and Lutz (also mostly found in Canada) as well as Adirondack, a somewhat more premium species found in eastern North America.
Goes Well With
Pretty much any playing style, body wood or body shape. Spruce is highly versatile and performs beautifully across genres and applications.
