Overview

GTe Blacktop

With its compact body shape and punchy sound, the GTe Blacktop adds a fresh visual flavor to our line of GT guitars along with a new sonic profile thanks to its walnut back and sides. Along with a spruce top, this model's all-solid tonewoods yields a midrange-focused response similar to mahogany but with a bit more overtone presence. Walnut's initially dry character opens up as the guitar is played, and you'll notice more bloom and power in the low end with time. The C-Class bracing inside dials up even more bass resonance and warmth. Its balance and clarity makes the GTe Blacktop a great choice for live play, recording, or songwriting purposes, pairing up with the portable GT frame for a seriously fun experience that's both comfortable and musically inspiring.

Features

Taylor GT

The Expression System® 2 captures more of a guitar’s dynamic properties using a breakthrough behind-the-saddle design.

Amazing portable guitar!!!

5 out of 5 stars Luis Z.

Absolutely incredible! This guitar delivers a huge, rich sound in a compact, travel-friendly body. It’s a joy to play, with a solid, sturdy case that offers great protection on the go. The matte black finish adds a sleek, bold look—just be mindful, as it requires a bit of extra care to keep it pristine. Overall, it’s a fantastic guitar that exceeds expectations in both sound and build quality.

Purchased this apr one year ago and very very happy. Very nice looking, good quality without any gimmicks and pleasure to play and hear. Excellent value for money with sturdy bag too.

Pretty dry here during wintertime, but no problem so far with basic humidifier.

Perfect for the couch

5 out of 5 stars Couch Surfer

The perfect couch guitar! I’ve always liked the GS mini but felt cramped playing them. This guitar is as comfortable as I could imagine and sounds considerable fuller than similar sized parlor guitars.

Easy on fingers and pleasing to eyes. Tonality a rich rainbow of harmonic blends with long sustain.

4 out of 5 stars Mike M.

Out of the box, very good setup, no adjustments required. Easy on fingers to play. When playing the guitar, I seem to gravitate to songs in minor keys, perhaps because the guitar has a special way with the minor harmonic blends. Might be the sonic quality of walnut, or me turning into the quiet elegance of the black on brown appearance. A great pleasure to play, I get lost in the resonance when playing. When I received it, I noted as others have the irregular surface of the top from top end of the bridge toward the end pin. I contracted the distributor concerned that this was a defect in manufacture and contacted Taylor as well. Taylor assured me that this "was not a defect" but was simply a result of the asymmetrical C-Class bracing. The distributor didn't have another example to exchange it for. Since each wooden instrument is unique and I liked the sonic qualities of this guitar so well, I did not return it, even knowing that if I every wanted to resell it, it might raise questions with any future buyers. Based on play-ability, overall appearance and sonic qualities I would have rated this a 5+. However, it's just hard to overlook that irregularity in the top. The case is nice, light, protective and attractive. It is not however able to maintain internal humidity, even when keeping a humidifier in the case. The Taylor hard cases will maintain humidity for quite some time. So I'm adding a humidifier to the room where I keep the guitars as no hard cases available for this one and I can't get the humidity up to the range where they should be kept with humidifiers in the instruments. (Guitar purchased through Chicago Music Exchange- very helpful and quality distributor).

How does Taylor like my guitar?

1 out of 5 stars Bob B.

I might like it if I had it. It is sitting at Taylor because of a manufacturing defect. Here’s hoping Taylor does the right thing and replaces it with a different guitar.

Love it, but.

4 out of 5 stars Joe D.

Absolutely love the GT models and this one in particular. Playability and sound are top notch. In addition, it looks gorgeous. My only issue has been how susceptible it has been to humidity. I have 3 other Taylors with the Taylor Sense device, and this one is always picking up much more humidity than the other woods. I’m not sure if it is a feature of the specific wood, but it concerns me.

Stepping stone

3 out of 5 stars Michael S.

No matter how much neck relief was adjusted, the guitar buzzed, so I sent it back to Taylor. They did a neck reset. I then found the nut was too high and took it to my local guitar shop to have the slots lowered. When it was all said and done, the ES2 just didn't sound right though my Bose S1 Pro. After making numerous adjustments to the sensors, I ended up selling the guitar. But I really liked the GT dimensions, so I later purchased the GT811e. The only issue was again the nut. After having it lowered, the guitar plays and sounds like a dream.

Another Fabulous Taylor Guitar!

5 out of 5 stars Robin T.

I have had a number of Taylor instruments over the years, all of which have been fantastic to play, have been beautifully built and have had that multi-faceted Taylor sound. My GTe Blacktop is no exception, including it's rather unique black Spruce top with natural American Walnut back and sides, it is a great addition to my collection. As I have found with all the Taylor dealers I have dealt with, John at Reidy's Music in Blackburn couldn't have been more helpful in assisting me in my quest for another acoustic guitar!

Nice sound but a lot of irregularities on the soundboards. Rather disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars philippe p.

A nice guitar with a round and pleasant sound.
The projection is powerful given the size of the guitar.
For cons I find that the finishes are not up to the reputation of Taylor. The soundboard has very visible irregularities to the eye because of the black color, and quite perceptible to the touch. I'm disappointed with that. Even after an exchange the same defects are present.
Taylor explained to me that it was due to the difference in essence between the haromny table and the dams.
In this case why choose these types of wood??
If I had known that, I would not have chosen this model because of these too visible defects.

Response from Taylor Guitars, Glen W.

Hi Philippe,
Sounds like you're seeing some brace telegraphing in the top. This happens when braces are more parallel with the top grain but nothing to worry about. If it seems like something else, please reply to our email with some pics. If there's a defect, we'll take care of it under warranty. Thanks!
