Why do you use coated strings? The elixir nano webs on my Aug 2022 814 CE fray and are messy. Will uncoated sound the same? I play it enough so that I don’t need the anti corrosion properties of the coated strings.
The coating provides a longer life span for the strings. This helps us when we're shipping guitars to retailers, sometimes across the world. Un-coated strings can have different sonic characteristics than coated strings. We recommend experimenting with different strings to find what works best for you.

Just purchased an 814ce (build date 31 Oct 22). Look like Elixir 12-53 PBs fitted. That sound right? When did Taylor move across to D'Addario 12-53? Any particular reason for the change? Just curious.
We changed to D'Addario XS Phosphor Bronze in early October 2022 so that's what would have been on your guitar. Over the years and for various reasons, we’ve occasionally used D’Addario strings on certain instruments in addition to Elixir. That continues today. Nothing is more important to us than your guitar’s performance. So you can be confident in knowing we stand behind every string that goes on our instruments.
Is Shaded Edgeburst for the entire guitar available as an option?
Just the top for this model.
My Taylor 814ce was made 04/04/2022. What strings came from the factory? (They look like maybe Elixir PB 12/53)
That's exactly what we were installing at that time, with Nanoweb coating.
What material are the stock bridge pins supplied with 814ce? Thinking about upgrading to fossilized walrus ivory bridge pins...wondering how seriously the material of the bridge pin affects overall sound (loudness / sustain / etc.).
Ebony for both the bridge pins and bridge. Using bridge pins of the same material as the bridge is extremely effective in producing a pleasant tone.
What tuners come stock on this model? What upgrade options are available?
This comes with Taylor tuners, Gotoh 510 tuners are available for $175 additional charge.

I recently bought a new 2024 814ce. I have been wanting this guitar for a long time. This guitar sounds and looks so beauttiful. The palyability is unrivaled. It is great for any kind of style of play or genre. I look forward every day to being able to play it.

its a lovely somewhat expensive ornament.
I have a 2025 814ce which I purchased from a seller who was told his brand new £3000 instrument needs a neck reset. The action at the 12th fret is over 4mm. He didn't want the bother and sold it to me. Whilst I've owned a Gibson J45 & a Martin I can say the workmanship on this guitar is on another level, Its flawless. It is a sight to behold. When I finally get to play Taylors flagship guitar it with the correct action I'll be a very happy man, until then its a lovely somewhat expensive ornament.

Situations like this can occasionally happen due to humidity changes during shipping or storage. Sometimes on newer guitars, the wood is still settling into being a guitar rather than a tree, and environmental fluctuations can affect the neck angle and action. The good news is that Taylor’s full bolt-on neck design makes adjustments straightforward and precise. An authorized Taylor service center can dial this in quickly and get the action where it should be. Once properly set up, you should be able to fully enjoy everything this flagship model has to offer.

That's the guitar I always wanted. Strumming or fingerpicking made easy. Cristal clear sound, powerful chords and almost infinite sustain, easy to handle due lightweight. Beveled rail is unique. ES2 system works great. The guitar looks worthy. I play it every day. Highly recommended!

I have five Taylor acoustics, two 814ce models. Besides my 724ce Koa, these are by far my favorites. Awesome rich sound and playability. I prefer the 11-52 strings, they sound just great. If you want the best of the best it is the 814ce.

I absolutely love this guitar I got one for Christmas, and I play it almost every day. It is a great guitar with amazing build quality. It is very comfortable to sit down with and to stand up with and play. It is very light to me which is important to me because I stand a lot to play.

Beautiful guitar with playability issues.
This is a beautiful guitar. I purchased it direct from Taylor. Construction quality is outstanding. But I'm having playability issues with it. It is hard to play a bar chord on it. Sound's like muted strings unless I press extremely hard. Well you don't play long doing that. So I made a comment about it and it was suggested that I take it and have it set up. So I did and they made a truss rod adjustment. Now the guitar plays much better but still not up to par. They also said that they could sand the saddle a small amount. I'm concerned about that since I don't want to alter the guitar because I may end up sending it back and I know that's not acceptable to Taylor and rightfully so. But it is a piece of art. But my $300 Yamaha is more playable. That's a problem for me. So I'm taking it to a Luthier who is going to replace the saddle with a smaller one height wise. Go from there.

Taylor 814ce added and compared to Martin D28 Modern Deluxe
Recently received my 814CE. Comparing it to my Martin D28 Modern Deluxe. I have to say the Taylor is better built and beautiful. The clear coat doesn’t scratch very easy at all compared to the Martin! The sustain is close but not as long as d28. Obviously the 814 isn’t as loud with the smaller shape but it’s close. My neck needed adjustment as it wasn’t straight but I love it and do not regret purchasing it!
My D28 has glue squeeze out and wood dust chips visible under the back braces and all of the rosewood vertical side braces are the same shade except the most visible brace (through the sound hole) is way lighter: nit picky but when you spend 4k$ on a guitar that’s some amateur stuff. Nothing to report with the Taylor in those terms!

Great guitar, but a good setup makes it better.
About 2 years ago, I came across a brand new 814 DLX from 2019 that had been sitting on the store shelves for 2 years. I was looking to upgrade from my first guitar (a beautiful Korean Sigma dread). At the time, I was testing out a lot of guitars, but kept coming back to that one. Honestly, I was looking heavily at the Taylor K24 or the Gibson J-45, but I kept coming back the 814.It played okay, and it sounded better than anything else I had tried. I wanted to get it setup by the store, but the convinced me to just "take it home"
When I got home and spent a lot of time with it, I found it lacked...something. For some reason, I could never get that sound I got in the store. A few months ago, I took it to a Taylor authorized service shop for a setup. I don't know what magic they worked on it, but that guitar came alive after that. It has more sustain, a much better action (expected), and they also did a re-shim. Apparently, hanging on the wall for 2 years had moved the neck slightly causing a lot of issues. Long story less long, by having it setup, it went from a really good guitar, to a fantastic guitar.
When I got home and spent a lot of time with it, I found it lacked...something. For some reason, I could never get that sound I got in the store. A few months ago, I took it to a Taylor authorized service shop for a setup. I don't know what magic they worked on it, but that guitar came alive after that. 814CE is smooth as butter!
Wow! I love this guitar. I bought it over a year ago and have been very impressed with everything about it. I did out the TaylorSense in it which gives me a great status of humidity (critical in the winter!) and making sure the battery is strong and won't die out for me during a show. The sounds, the touch, the action, everything about it is amazing!

I have had my 814 ce for several months and I am happy that I purchased it. It has a very comfortable neck and action. The tone is clear and medium bright with a good balance with the lower tones. The body contour is very comfortable. And, it is a beauty.

I’ve had my 814 CE about two weeks now I love the way it plays you can glide up and down the neck of that guitar. Your hand just slides so easy as you work the neck it’s a very easy guitar to fret as well. I’m 77 years old. I’ve had lotta guitars in my lifetime, but this is without a doubt the best guitar I have ever owned. Thank you, Taylor, I also have a 414ce custom.. it is a very nice guitar as well. I would not take anything for either Guitar.

Taylor 814ce Grand Auditorium - my favorite acoustic guitar
I've had my Taylor 814ce Grand Auditorium for almost a year and I love it. The rich tone, neck feel, body size, build quality, attention to details, and sheer beauty of this guitar live up to its well-deserved reputation as a top-quality instrument. I have and play several other top-quality guitars made by C.F. Martin and PRS Core electrics. I did a lot of research and played several Martins and Taylors before making my purchase decision on the 814ce. I'm retired and have been playing guitar for 56 years. I play in a band 3-4 times a month and at home 4-5 times a week, generally for 2 hours at a time. The 814ce is simply a joy to play. The radius arm rest makes it comfortable for long sessions. The ES2 pickup system is crisp and clear. The Grand Auditorium sounds awesome plugged or unplugged. This guitar inspires me to play my best. I selected mine from one of four displayed online at Sweetwater and my Sweetwater engineer, Ben was over the top helpful with the purchase and shipping arrangements.

Taylor 814ce - Simply Amazing
As the title implies, this guitar is overall amazing. As soon as the case was opened up at my local Guitar Center, I was taken away with the sheer beauty, and you can't forget about the smell, of this guitar. The Spruce top with Indian Rosewood back and sides was just glistening. Once in my hands, again, just amazement at the attention to detail Taylor commits to their products. The radius armrest was the first thing I noticed once the guitar was in my lap. I love this feature as it makes playing sitting down way more comfortable against my forearm or bicep. Then came the buttery smooth feel of the neck and fret work all the way down and into the venetian cutaway. Once I strummed the infamous G chord, I instantly was taken by the sound of this V-Class braced instrument. I then followed this chord up with some arpeggio picking of the D, C and G chords and my mind couldn't take any more. I played for a short time and looked over the guitar's beauty once more. From the smoked nickel tuners, down the Ebony fretboard with Element design inlays that is edged with maple binding to the abalone rosette surrounding the sound hole. The gloss finish is like looking at a mirror. At this point, my decision was made and I took this amazing instrument home with me where it will stay until my time on this earth is finished...then it will be handed down to my daughter. I was originally looking to get the 414ce but someone else had purchased that guitar the day before. I am so glad I came away with the 814ce instead. I also played the Martin HD28 and the Gibson J-45 Standard but this Taylor was more for my playing style. Anyways, I could go on and on about this guitar but I hope this review helps someone make their decision easier.

Quality, Sustain and Intonation Excellent
Purchased new from Sweetwater in 2018, with V-bracing. Did not like the sound, but quality, sustain & intonation were excellent. Emailed Bob Taylor and explained as best I could about the displeasing sound. Bob answered back and suggested replacing the Elixor strings with D'Adorian. Some improvement, but still not pleased with the sound. This resulted in the guitar hardly ever being played for the following 4-years and spent most time in vault storage. Recently 01/23, after watching Andy Powers UTube video on V-bracing, I removed it from the vault storage and after tuning and playing a few chords, it seemed to have a considerably more pleasing sound than when new.

I Love my 814 ce. The Indian Rose wood back and sides, with the Sitka Spruce top give it a bright, dynamic sound. I especially like the look of the arm. It has a marbling effect that sets it apart from many other guitars. No two are alike.

Beautiful looking, beautiful tone, great set-up quite frankly makes it easier to play than cheaper guitars, it’s more forgiving. A joy to play. It’s possibly more expensive than you’d ideally want to spend BUT well worth it. You will not be disappointed. I’ve only been playing for less than 2 years but I’m really happy I made the decision to buy the 814ce. I now also have the Koa 724ce.

Better Instrument than My Playing Ability (But for it!!!)
I love this guitar! In fact, it is a much better guitar than I am a musician. The action is low and fast; no buzz when strumming, clear notes when picking; it has wonderful sustain; and it stays in tune! I added the Taylor Sense and that helps me monitor the guitar’s vitals and am especially glad to keep tabs on the battery. Can’t say enough good things about my 814ce!!

My Taylor 814ce is an all around great guitar. The 814ce is a great looking guitar, built with the essential tone woods, a Sitka Spruce top and Indian Rosewood back and sides and is dressed with wood binding and inlays on the ebony fretboard. It plays exceptionally well and has a beautiful bright, round tone that is responsive and easily heard in any mix. The piezo pickup system doesn’t disappoint and allows the Taylor’s tone to shine through when plugged in as well.

Worth every penny
Beautiful, clean design is classy and timeless. This flagship Taylor has amazing tone and playability with good volume for a non-jumbo. Granted that I favor the bright, clean tone of Sitka spruce, but for that tone this guitar sounds better than anything else I've every played. It's hard to consider an almost-$4k guitar a "good value", but when I compare to more expensive customs nothing sounds as good to me. My only gripe is that I wish Taylor included an internal tuner. I understand that it's easier for the luthier to achieve the best sound and balance without extra wires and drilling/mounting to accommodate electronics, but Taylors have the ES2 pickup (which sounds pretty good for my fingerpicking style), so why not add a tuner?

I was worth it finally
My present 814ce is 5 stars!! The one I got delivered to my door was a mess. Although the tone, volume, and intonation were amazing. The playability was a one star disappointment. The neck was too wide and the strings were set too far apart. The neck was also slightly crooked as evidenced by the alignment of the strings to the white inlay on each side of the fretboard. It took all your strength to play F major. No fun!!

It’s a beautiful looking and very comfortable guitar. I do solo acoustic shows full time and I don’t even or can’t use this in live situations. The electronics are too harsh and unnatural. It’s a shame this expensive of a guitar can sound as bad as it does in live situations. I’m sure if EQed it could be playable but that’s even more disappointing that it needs tweaked and doesn’t sound good enough straight up to be played. I have 3 of high end Taylor’s and each one is the same

My favorite guitar
I went into a music shop about 15 years ago and played a few different guitars. The shop owner had me play an 814ce, and I was blown away by the playability, chime, sustain, and craftsmanship. But I couldn’t afford it, so it went onto the wish list. Fast forward to November of ’22 and I realized that I couldn’t wait any longer. I have numerous acoustic guitars, and after few months now, this is now the guitar that I reach for. Every time I open the case, the aroma of rosewood, spruce and ebony greets me, and then I just appreciate the craftsmanship. The real pleasure comes with playing it. It is comfortable, fast, and sounds delicious, whether I’m playing finger style or flat picking. I should have taken the plunge years ago, but I’m glad that I waited. The V bracing and other updates make this guitar, my favorite guitar. I also have Taylor 717, 214ce, GS Mini Koa, a Seagull 12 string, a Guild Dreadnaught, a Journey Carbon Travel..

Perfect match
I went to the Thomann Store (I guess that’s Germanys biggest Musicstore) and tried all single cut-models they had in stock, the Taylor 814ce was one of the first ones I played and I was in love from the first second. After hours of trying all the guitars, I went home with the Taylor about three months ago and never regretted it.
Definitely one of the best guitars I ever played and still as happy as on the first day, every time I play it.

Easy, safe and sound!
Great balance and sound, ease of playing with convenient fretboard and armrest.
I'm torn between two great guitars I've owned in my life. The first was a Martin D28 that I bought in 1971 that had that blooming base response, especially when playing first-position chords. But I could never get the guitar setup properly because it had no truss rod so it was hard to play up the neck, and by 1981 it needed a neck reset that I couldn't afford. The other was the tailor 814 CE that I bought in 2008 that sounded great both unplugged and plugged and was much more playable up the neck. It seemed to get more sustained the older you got. It was a great guitar that I loved and other people loved the sound of. Unfortunately, arthritis in my thumb and much more severely in my right shoulder made it so I couldn't play anymore and I sold the guitar about 6 months ago for the same amount of money that I paid for it 24 years before. It's kind of like playing the guitar for free for 24 years. I could have gotten hundreds more for it if it hadn't developed some crinkling in the lacquer at the top where my right arm went over it which I was told by several people including Taylor, to who I sent pictures of it, said it would require an entire refinishing of the face which would have been far more expensive then the increased value. I was very disappointed with that.

The Taylor 814ce is beautiful to the eye, the ear and in the hands. Its rich and robust tone is balanced across the strings up and down the neck and it is a pleasure to play. I love this guitar and it is a wonderful companion to my Taylor 517 Grand Pacific.
The guitar is fantastic form a playability and sound perspective. I was however a little disappointed because the pick guard got a little unglued and had a small bump in the middle.

Workmanship and sound is excellent. Action is a little high, and as a mostly electric player, I’m finding it hard to play lead on. I need to experiment with lower action and lighter strings. I think it has enough volume to handle that.

It's as playable as I expected it to be; low action, and, for me, a perfectly shaped neck; the arm rest is a wonderful, and comfortable, idea; I usually fingerpick and I find the sound on the level of my 414ce, which is more than acceptable; when strumming, I find the sound a bit richer and fuller, maybe a bit heavier on the bass. I'm 72 years old, and this will be the last guitar I buy; I couldn't have wished for a better final purchase.

Spoke with Taylor rep at my local guitar store. It was the best decision I could have made. I’m definitely a beginner guitar player - that being said - I instantly heard the difference in sound once I picked up the 814ce. Mike spent a lot of time with me explaining and having me try all the different Taylor options and what to look for when purchasing any guitar. Every experienced guitarist I spoke with regarding a big money commitment for a guitar told me to purchase the BEST guitar I could afford. So I did -I took advantage of the give one get one and also purchased a GS mini.

I loved my 2006 Taylor 814 but I must say.....the new and improved model (2022) is amazing! I also have a 914 and I'm not sure which one I like better! I have been playing for over 50 years and have had the good fortune to own many guitars and the 814 does it all and it does it all superbly. Another home-run by Taylor!

Having been an electric player the 814 CE is now my favourite guitar - cant put it down. Great sales service from the local Taylor dealer supported by the Taylor rep.
I have been playing for 40 yrs and whilst I started on acoustic I have been mostly an electric player. A few months back I spent a music weekend with an old friend who has a stable of acoustic guitars including Taylors so I got to play one for the first time.
Just amazed at the difference between the Taylors the mid level acoustic guitars I already had. So I bought one. I tried quite a few and finally settled on an 814 CE. I haven’t been disappointed. The tone is multilevel and majestic. The electric pick ups for live playing are solid & easy to use. You can play it hard or soft and it holds tune at least as well as any other guitar I own. The tonation is perfect across the whole fret board. However the stand out feature is the action - so easy you can play it all day and I do. It does that without fret buzz whilst still delivering massive volume. It has become my favourite guitar and I even have to diarise practice time to keep my electric technique up to scratch.

A stunning investment promising years and years of joy!
I’ve owned a Martin HD28 for 20 years, and have only recently got the measure of it. But I’ve always wanted a Taylor. I’ve hovered on the verge of ownership for years, but finally took the plunge recently with a gorgeous 814ce. Unlike the Martin, this Taylor was very nicely set up from the off. I was a bit unsure about the electrics, but Andertons made some adjustments to the pick-up - just in the shop, only took moments, and I’m now very happy with the sound.
Acoustically, the guitar is absolutely stunning. It’s hard to explain, and I’m only an amateur musician, but I adore both guitars! Maybe like a wife and a mistress, I now couldn’t do without either! The Taylor has not diminished my love for the Martin; I just love them both!
Naturally the Taylor now comes out to open-mic nights, and my other Martin (road series) is up for sale. No comparison there.
In conclusion, if you think you ought to have a Taylor, then get one. You don’t “buy” a guitar like this, it’s an investment.

The sound and feel of the guitar are great. As with my other Taylor it suits my playing style perfectly.
However, unlike my other Taylor, when I put on the capo it throws it slightly out of tune. I am about to try changing the strings to see if this solves the problem.

I absolutely love my Taylor 814ce. It is a pleasure to play and a beauty to behold.

Beautiful instrument but needing adjustments to improve sound
Its a beautifully made guitar but I have had some issues with the 'action'. I've had to return to the store to have neck adjusted to remove 'twanging' on some strings further up the fret board and also when I use a capo. In the last few weeks this issue has returned on different strings and I will have to return to the store again.
Hi Graeme, Sorry you're having these issues. Custom capo set ups can be a little tricky and it sometimes takes a couple tries to find that sweet spot for your playing style. Please reply to our email if you need any further assistance. Thanks!
I belong to a "amateur" band with only electro acoustic folk guitars. My new Taylor guitar is just great. We all together played famous songs such as : Hotel California, what's up, Mad World an so on...My Taylor guitar is so easy to play with and it sounds fantastic. Purchasing this guitar is worthwhile!

I had done some considerable research into which guitar I was going to spend my money on, and had looked at the obvious in @#$%, and @#$%, plus a host of other lesser-known brands. I tried a dozen guitars in my search, but without a doubt, the 814ce oozed tone, sustain, and class! The playability, action, and the look of it are just awesome, but the sound….just amazing! This guitar replaced my thirty-year-old @#$%… not a bad guitar, but the 814 is leagues above it in every way!

This guitar certainly has workmanship that is like no other. The sound is perfect, clear and pristine. The wood is immaculately beautiful. It's play-ability and performance are simply smooth and beautiful.

The Taylor 814ce is unlike any other acoustic I have ever played. The vclass bracing makes every note so perfectly responsive. I can’t put it down or stop looking at it. Truly one of the finest guitars I have ever played
Wish I'd bought one of these years ago.
It's so, so lovely. Every note is enunciated, but altogether they speak with one complex voice. My old dreadnought has a sort of booming smushed sound, which is what you want from a dreadnought, but the Taylor is just its own Taylor self, and the Grand Auditorium is comfortable to play, intonation is the best I've ever seen on an acoustic, and really does multi-task for so many styles and techniques.

Great except the 2 "bubbles" in the wooden pickguard.
Except for one thing it's a geat guitar. It's a brand new 814-ce and had a couple of "bubbles" in the wood pickguard. The salesman pressed them and they seemed to flatten down ok. But since then have reappeared and won't flatten back down. If it hadn't been brand new I wouldn't be as disturbed by it, but it is brand new. What can you do to correct this?

The guitar's sound is excellent! Perfect in fact. The finish of the guitar is perfect too. I don't think I'll every find a better guitar. Basically, I've found the one.

IVE OWNED THE REST,NOW I OWN THE BEST....
I am very satisfied with my purchase of my Taylor 814ce,...everything from the feel of the neck,the astounding sound produced,and the projection of that sound,thru the magnificent electronics....let's me know that I made the right choice. I have 5 Taylors,and I love to play each,and every one of them....and yes,I have owned Gibsons,Martins,Guild,ect....but my choice will ALWAYS be Taylor....
